Today the Powell County Chamber of Commerce issued a Press Release concerning the intended closure of the Title & Registration Bureau in Deer Lodge (copied below).
The City of Deer Lodge will be holding an emergency meeting to discuss taking legal action against the Department Of Justice/Attorney General. Please try to attend the meeting at City Hall on Monday, July 18th at 12:15 pm.
The Mayor, Zane Cozby, had a letter published today in the Montana Standard outlining the financial impact of this closure on the City of Deer Lodge.
Please join us in opposing this closure, and help try to convince the State Departments responsible to reconsider their decision.

POWELL COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESS RELEASE
The recent announcement by the State of Montana of its intention to close the Title & Registration Bureau in Deer Lodge was met with dismay and anger by our local community and its leaders. The Directors and Officers of the Powell County Chamber of Commerce share these strong emotions, especially in light of the underhand process that was used in making this decision. No consideration was given to the impact on our community, let alone the hardship this will place on employees and their families given the extra time and costs placed upon them.
The impact upon our community cannot be overestimated. Our local economy will be hard hit by the loss of 35 jobs, local stores and other businesses will see a reduction in income and impact their ability to keep their employees. Many of the TRB employees will not be willing or able to make the daily commute to Helena. No financial or other assistance has been announced by the State, and those that do not transfer may well be denied unemployment benefits. The City of Deer Lodge does not have the resources or opportunities to employ those affected by this closure. Many may be forced to leave the community with their families, another major impact on our local economy and schools.
It would seem that no consideration had been given towards any other option than moving the facility to Helena, in spite of initial statements made by State officials. Other statements made at the time of the initial announcement now turn out to have been false or misleading. Deer Lodge has buildings meeting or exceeding the States requirements, at a much lower cost than Helena, but this has not been investigated by the relevant departments.
The Chamber of Commerce stands alongside the local community in requesting the State reconsider its decision, and will continue to work with our community leaders and officials to come to a satisfactory conclusion.
