Western Weekend at Grant-Kohrs Ranch

There will be a roundup of all the activities that made up the frontier cattle era at Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site (NHS) in Deer Lodge, July 27 and 28 from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Saturday will feature the work of the cowboy, as this year’s calf crop receives the Lazy G Hanging K brand registered to the ranch.  Throughout the day, brand crafts and games will initiate children into the history of the open range, while numerous other programs and displays will be offered to visitors of all ages. The calves will be branded between 10:30 and noon on Saturday, barring rain.  Wet stock cannot be branded.  Find out why at the event.

Sunday will be given over to teamsters and draft horses.  From 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm, we will be demonstrating our newly rebuilt overshot stacker.  Like a giant horse-powered pitchfork, it is the type of stacker most commonly used at the ranch.  The “beaverslide” haystacker used in recent years will also be on display.  Additional programs for children and adults will be offered throughout the day. Like branding, haying cannot be done in the rain.  Wet stacked hay can spontaneously ignite.  Other activities will go as scheduled, rain or shine.

Admission is free for all programs.  For details, visit www.nps.gov/grko or call (406) 846-2070.
